Zakharova spoke about attempts to recruit diplomats by Western intelligence agencies

Psychological pressure is being exerted on Russian diplomats abroad, some of them have faced recruitment attempts by the secret services of Western countries. This was stated by the official representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry Maria Zakharova, reports TASS.

“In Western countries or countries where the corresponding influence of the special services is high, they [Russian diplomats] received specific proposals not at the level of single approaches, but at the level of specific letters, addressed to personal mail, personal messengers. At the level of blackmail and threats about what they will receive in the form of bonuses, if they, feeling their conscience awakened, follow it, go outside the embassy and begin to interact with the relevant special services, — she said.

In addition, according to Zakharova, Russian diplomats face “psychological violence” on a daily basis, and diplomatic property is “damaged.” “These are all kinds of” creativity ” in relation to our embassies, these are attacks on cars. <…> Diplomats really live on the front lines,— she added.

The official representative of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs believes that one of the goals of such a “political campaign” against Russia is the exclusion from the international community of the Russian diplomatic service.

Earlier, Russian Ambassador to the United States Anatoly Antonov said that the Russian embassy operates “in a hostile environment”; and threats of physical violence against its employees. “American intelligence officials flit around the Russian embassy, handing out FBI and CIA phones that you can call to establish cooperation,” — the ambassador said. He also clarified that politicians publish in the American media calls for embassy staff and the military to “go over to the side of the so-called democracy.”

In mid-April, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said that “virtually terrorist acts” had been carried out against Russian institutions abroad. Lavrov added that not only diplomats are being threatened: Russian citizens, he said, are regularly attacked. He recommended employees of diplomatic missions abroad “not to walk alone.”
